BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Marjorie Joan (Chappell) Cummins passed away March 6, 2013, in Hope Hospice, Bonita Springs, Fla., after battling multiple myeloma cancer since January 2007.
Born in Indianapolis, (Marion Co) on Dec. 13, 1938, Marjorie was the daughter of William Kenneth and Launa May (Records) Chappell.
She married Allen H. Cummins on June 21, 1959, at the St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, Indianapolis, who survives.
She was a graduate of Warren Central High School, Indianapolis 1957; Purdue University 1962; and Hixon Floral Design School, Cleveland, Ohio 1985.
Marjorie taught home economics and physical education at Burnettsville High School, was a substitute teacher for the Plymouth School Corp, Plymouth, and the JESSE program; she was a 10 year 4-H member, a 4-H leader, and a judge for county and state fairs; assistant for Dorsey Conners, Chicago Sun Times columnist. She painted and sold decorative wood crafts at craft shows and craft malls, and was the former owner of The Flower Market gift and flower shop, Lafayette and owner of Elston Lanes, Lafayette.
Marjorie was a 33-year member of the John Purdue Club and Purdue President’s Council and a lifetime member of the Purdue Alumni Association. She was a member of Stidham United Methodist Church, Lafayette, the Lafayette Tourist Club, South West Florida Purdue Alumni Club, Tippecanoe County Extension Homemakers Club, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Charter Member P. Buckley Moss Society, Sassy Ladies Red Hats, Decorative Painters Society and the Lafayette Historic Auto Club.
She liked to read, play mah jongg, needlepoint, decorative painting, travel, and was a great cook. Marjorie traveled 49 of the U.S. states and more than 30 foreign countries.
Marjorie is survived by husband Allen of 54 years, two daughters, Kathleen Cummins of Reston, Va. and Karen (Jeff) Kaser of Warsaw, and son Bryan (Holly) Cummins, Lafayette; four grandchildren, Sarah and Grace Kaser, Warsaw, Jordan Cummins and Cooper Cummins, Lafayette, and three stepgrandchildren, Jordan Hill, Indianapolis, Paige Hill and Gabrielle Hill, Lafayette, brother Verle (Debbie) Chappell, West Lafayette, sister-in-law Donna Cummins, Nappanee, nieces and nephews Duane (Cindy) Chappell, Moorhead, Ky., Kimberly (Larry) Conrad, Goshen, Brent (Tamera) Cummins, Granger, and Darla (Chris) Lingle, Wakarusa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law Richard Cummins; sister-in-law Joan Chappell and nephew Dale Chappell.
The family will receive friends at the Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette on Monday from 4-8 p.m. Friends will also be received one hour prior to a 10 a.m. service Tuesday at Stidham United Methodist Church, 5300 S. 175 West, Lafayette, Rev. Dr. David Inskeep officiating. Graveside service to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel, Plymouth at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
