MISHAWAKA — Margaret Ann “Margie” Smith, 83, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Margaret Ann “Margie” Keyser was born Aug. 22, 1929 in Plymouth to Ford I. and Eva C. (Lackey) Keyser.
June 11, 1949 Margie married Robert D. Smith in Bainbridge. Together for 63 years they lived in Greencastle, Plymouth, South Bend and Mishawaka. They have spent their winters in Lake Placid, Fla. since 1991.
Margie was a wonderful mother to seven children, Julianne (late Gary Fridley), James (Debra), Alan (Edmay), Susie (Craig) Scheu, Sally (Frank) Zappia, Nancy (Pat) Catanzarite and Betsy (John) Barron.
She was grandma to Noel (Tim) Hanson, Janie (Art) Renteria, Robert Fridley, Richard (Darci) Freeman, Andrew (Tiffani) Freeman, Eryn Dow, Christian Smith, Frank IV, Sarah, Rosa Zappia, Mary (Josh) Martin, Anna, Nick, Patrick Catanzarite, Meredith, Meagan, Jack and Joseph Redd Barron. Great-grandchildren are Gunnar and Kyra Hanson, Cailyn, Ethan, Owen and Myles Freeman and Ava Zappia.
Margie is survived by her sisters, Edna M. Keltz-Wagoner, Phyllis (Joe) Elkins; sister-in-law, Margaret L. Smith and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, Ida F. and Gerald F. (Pickle) Smith; sister, Mary Jo Clouse; brothers-in-law, Redd and Richard Smith and son-in-law, Gary Fridley.
Margie was proud to be a member of the Plymouth High School class of 1947 and was a varsity cheerleader for the Pilgrims. She leaves behind many cherished Plymouth friends and classmates.
Margie’s greatest accomplishment was being a loving, devoted wife and mother. After raising her children, Margie went to work for the former Valley American Bank. She was the favorite teller at the downtown Mishawaka branch from 1974 to 1991.
She was the past president of the Mishawaka High School Faculty Wives and supporter of Mishawaka and Plymouth High School Athletics.
Margie was a member of Good Shepherd and Saint Peter’s Lutheran Churches as well as Trinity Lutheran in Lake Placid.
Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 12 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, Saturday, Oct. 13 at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, 437 Dragoon Trail, Mishawaka. A cemetery service will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Oakhill Cemetery Chapel, South Michigan St., Plymouth. Pastor Bryan Borger will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mishawaka High School Scholarship Foundation.
