Lions fall to unbeaten Chargers

BREMEN — Bremen’s young lineup entered Thursday night’s home contest in the hopes of a season-first win versus unbeaten West Noble. Instead, the Lions suffered a 65-48 setback.
Still, it wasn’t all bad news for the inexperienced Bremen squad.
“Honestly, I’m really proud of a lot of the kids in there for the way they played tonight. Our entire team is playing their fourth career varsity game, which, for a lot of things on the floor tonight really impressed me,” said Bremen boys basketball coach Ryan Eakins.
Although Bremen trailed early, it was still a one-possession game until a 9-2 first period-closing run by West Noble put the Chargers up by double digits at 20-10 at the first quarter break. The visitors stretched that lead out slightly to a 33-21 halftime advantage, but the Lions came roaring back in the second half.
Bremen opened the third quarter on a 9-3 run sparked by a Ryan Topper lay-in on a Joey Atkins assist and culminating in a floater from the lane and traditional three-point play by Topper that cut the Lions’ deficit to 36-30 at the 4:15 stop of the stanza.
Bremen had a chance to cut into that deficit further when Sam Lacher came streaking through the lane and laid in a shot off the glass at around the 3:45 mark, but instead of a blocking foul, Lacher was called for a charge, nullifying the bucket. West Noble closed out the frame 9-2, and the home team never trailed by less than double figures the rest of the night.
