LaVille basketball players are on a mission
LAKEVILLE — Several members of the LaVille High School boys basketball team will be taking team work into the mission field this summer.
“We took a mission trip with Bob Read and the Plymouth wrestling team two years ago, and it was a great experience,” said LaVille coach Michael Edison. “We took 12 players and myself, and my dad (Assistant Coach Jack Edison) went along. Originally we planned to go with Bob every three years when he goes, but our guys had such a great experience and came back talking about it all the time so our guys this year came and asked me if we could go again this year.”
The team is planning a “basketball mission” trip to Costa Rica through the organization Score International Sports Mission Trips. They will leave in June and will be joining with Pizza Hut to help raise money later this month.
On April 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the boys will be at Pizza Hut in Plymouth selling special tickets for the buffet for $8. Those who buy the tickets will get dinner and a drink and help the team do their work in Costa Rica.
“The last time I know our guys had an amazing experience,” said Edison. “The players get to go out into the villages. You play a little basketball with the kids, but we deliver food, work on projects around; whatever they give you to do.”
“I can’t go this year but Score has coaches on staff that will go with them, and really anybody can go,” said Edison. “If it’s just one player and not a whole team they’ll match him up with another team going down so if any player in the area wanted to go with us they could.”
The players must raise the $1600 each that it will take to put the trip together, and the Pizza Hut night is just one of the fundraisers they have planned.
“When I first wanted to do this I thought it might be kind of hard to get kids to want to go,” said Edison. “Obviously it has turned out to be pretty easy. Along with strengthening their relationship to Jesus Christ I really hope that our kids come away from the trips seeing how unbelievably blessed we are as a nation and as individuals. I hope that it encourages them to help others whenever you get the chance.”
