Lady Trojans slip vs Tigers, 49-32

BOURBON — The Lady Triton Trojans came up short Wednesday night as they lost to the undefeated Lady Warsaw Tigers 49-32 at the Trojan Trench.
“They are a good team,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman. “There is a reason they haven’t lost a game this year. They play very good defense. They don’t get out of position. They don’t hurt themselves. They take care of it and they work to their strengths.”
The Trojans started off slow as they were only able to hit one field goal in the first quarter, going 1 for 9. Warsaw’s pressure style defense caused some problems and took Triton some time to adjust. Warsaw led 11-3 after one with senior Jennifer Walker-Crawford scoring seven of her game-high 18 in the quarter.
Triton played better in the second quarter and was able to hit some shots. The Lady Trojans were led by sophomore Kylie Mason, who hit 4 of her 5 3-pointers in the quarter, which included a buzzer-beating bank shot that closed the gap to a 25-21 Warsaw lead.
It would not be enough as the Tigers were able to force 23 turnovers on 16 steals for the game.
Warsaw was able to push the lead out to nine after three with the score at 35-26, and Triton was never able to bring it any closer as the Tigers started out the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run that was just too much for the Trojans to overcome.
Even with how good Warsaw is, Heckaman still felt like his team had a chance and made some mistakes in critical junctures of the game.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Warsaw, but I think we hurt ourselves in key situations,” he said. “We cut it to two points there in the second half early on.  We had some turnovers in key points of the game or we gave up some offensive rebounds that led to points. We just had inopportune times for lapses.”
The game was a good barometer for where the Trojans are as they get ready for two more tough opponents after the holiday break.
They will host a tough Oregon-Davis team Jan. 2 and then host Northern State Conference leader John Glenn Jan. 4.
Warsaw will host a tournament on Dec. 27 starting at 10 a.m. playing South Bend St. Joseph.
Triton’s record now stands at 8-3 and Warsaw is now 9-0.
