Lady Dragons open sectional play with rout of Kouts

October 2, 2012

DeMOTTE — The Argos girls’ soccer team got off to a strong sectional start Monday as the defending-champion Lady Dragons claimed a 7-0 rout over Kouts at the Class A Covenant Christian Sectional.
Playing on a field much smaller than last year and controlling the play meant the Kouts’ defense was soon packed in the box. The Dragons countered with balls to the wings and crosses. Allie Flower got to the end of a Raelynn LaFrance cross and knocked a half-volley in for an early goal. Katie Williams dribbled to the other wing, cut back, and crossed a ball that found Jami Patterson for a nice header and some breathing room. Patterson scored again on a pass from freshman Valerie Rospopo to make it 3-0 at the break.
“We passed well from the start, and my only complaint was that we missed several chances early,” Argos girls soccer coach Jon Alcorn said. “We had three or four opportunities to put it away, and in tourney time, we need to be more efficient. We had some tremendous passing in the second half also, and saw some great things from the younger players.”
Freshmen and sophomores combined for two goals and six assists.
Abby Stauffer won a ball on the wing near midfield and hit Kayla Prochno checking into space at the center. The senior took a few dribbles, saw the keeper was off her line, and hit a booming strike from 35-plus yards. The Dragons created two or three one-on-ones with the keeper later but kept missing.
Freshmen Lillie Kozuch and Hannah Harrell got the Dragons going again when Kozuch won a ball at midfield against the run of play, and slipped the ball ahead to Harrell charging into a gap. Kozuch received the ball back as the two combined to cover 40 yards quickly. Entering the penalty area, and with the keeper rushing out, Kozuch laid the ball toward the far post, where Harrell was able to touch it in. A few minutes later, Katie Williams assisted Patterson a second time as the senior completed the hat trick. The final tally of the night found Kozuch assisting another freshman, Valerie Rospopo.
The Dragons, now 10-5-2, play Rensselaer Central, the bye team, on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
Kouts finished their inaugural season at 5-7-2.
