Lady Dragons halt Elkhart Christian streak, 2-1

ELKHART — The Elkhart Christian Academy girls soccer team has begun its first year in the Northern Indiana Soccer Conference with a bang, riding a four-game win streak into Thursday’s match with Argos.
But the defending NISC-champion Lady Dragons snapped the streak, scoring two goals in the first half and holding on for a 2-1 victory on the road Thursday.
“Really, it was some of the best passing we’ve had all year,” said Argos girls soccer coach Jon Alcorn. “At the half, we didn’t have much to complain about. But I told them we’d either pull away or they’d make it 2-1 and we’d be in for a battle. The start of the second half could make the difference.”
Argos struck early in the game with some solid passing that ended with Jami Patterson slotting a ball to Raelynn LaFrance for a finish just five minutes in. Patterson scored a goal of her own, taking a throw from Valerie Rospopo, turning and hitting a shot over the Eagle keeper. While the Dragons controlled the half, they were unable to pull away.
The Dragons controlled play after the break but were unable to notch the third goal, and Natalia Armijas picked up an errant ball and finished into the side of the net to cut the lead to one with about 20 minutes to play. The play turned out to be the last best challenge for the hosts as the Dragons moved to 7-3-2 overall and 3-0 NISC. The Eagles are 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the NISC.
