Lady Cavs win 2nd straight versus North Judson, 63-45

December 23, 2011

CULVER — The Lady Cavaliers overcame a slow start to defeat the North Judson Lady Jays at home Thursday night, 63-45.
Culver (6-6) scored just six points in the first quarter, while the visiting Lady Jays (7-4) put up 15, but the second quarter heated up quickly.
The Cavs came out battling back from the get-go and held Judson to just 10 points for the quarter, running a full court press that caused Judson to turn the ball over several times. On the offensive end, the Cavs were setting screens along the outside of the basket, opening up shots while the post players were running between the basket and the elbow getting off quick shots and scoring in the paint. Kayla Shaffer scored 11 points in the second quarter — en route to a game-high 17 — one being a huge 3-point bucket, Angella Lewellen also had a 3-point bucket, and Tatum Schultz hit two points from the free throw line.
Judson’s Kayla Zimmerman scored five points, and Elisabeth White hit a 3-point shot on top of putting up two points from the free throw line, and the score was all tied up, 25-25 at the half.
Culver’s momentum carried into the third quarter as the team began running a full court man-to-man defense that caused Judson to turn the ball over back to back on their first two possessions and made shot execution difficult when Judson did get shots off. Culver took advantage with a 3-point bucket that put them in the lead for the first time and continued to get off shots and go to the free throw line for the remainder of the quarter. Mickella Hardy had two huge three-point plays that got the crowd going, and she scored an additional five points from the free throw line. Ali Overmyer sank a 3-point bucket on top of two points from the paint, and Lewellen also sank a 3-pointer.
The Lady Jays scored their only points from the foul line in the quarter, as Culver took a 45-32 lead into the final quarter. Lexie Messer had three points and both Elisabeth White and Ashlyn Mosher had two for the Jays.
Both teams were in the bonus entering the fourth quarter. Judson made back-to-back trips to the free throw line during the first minute of play, and Schultz was sent immediately after.
Judson was running a full court man to man press, but it only led to one Culver turnover, while the Jays turned the ball over several times.
Both teams scored most of their points from the foul line. Shaffer sank two two-point shots, Lewellen scored a bucket, and Overmyer hit a two-point shot on top of two free throws, while Schultz, Hardy, and Donna Zehner all scored points from the free throw line as well.
Judson’s Jordann Frasure scored seven points, Messer put up four, and both White and Haley Frasure scored a point each from the free throw line. Judson managed to get a steal and a bucket followed by another last-second shot and scored the last points of the game but it was too little, too late, and the Cavs won their second straight.
Culver will resume play after the holiday layover with a Northern State Conference game at New Prairie Jan. 6, while Judson plays at North Montgomery Dec. 29.
