Lady Cavs add 4x100 berth to state
CULVER — Culver Community had an historic performance at Tuesday’s girls track regional, advancing athletes in four events to the Indiana high school state finals.
Except that now, it’s five.
On Wednesday, the IHSAA invited Culver’s 4 x 100 relay team of Kayla Shaffer, Mickella Hardy, Justine Dexter and Denisha Brown to run at the state finals in Bloomington on Friday, June 6, using a callback provision in the qualifying rules.
In a nutshell ... they are too fast not to be there.
The IHSAA accepts 27 entries into each event at the state finals. If not enough athletes qualify -- either through their place or by running a tough electronically-timed performance standard -- then the IHSAA “calls back” the best non-qualifiers to fill out the field.
In the case of Culver, it was an easy decision.
The Cavaliers finished fourth at Tuesday’s Warsaw regional, clocking 49.54 seconds.
Out of all the regionals across the state, that was the 16th-fastest time recorded. Thus, the Cavs won’t just be running at state, they will be competing in the second heat, where award medals are frequently on the line.
