June 1 weekend in Culver

In addition to Culver Comm. High School graduation Friday evening and Culver Academies graduation Sunday morning, the coming days and weeks in Culver are as packed as might be expected as summer gets underway. Here's the scoop:

Farmer's Market is open
Culver’s Farmer’s Mar­ket has opened, at the cor­ner of Jefferson and Ohio Streets near downtown Cul­ver. Every Saturday, ven­dors will be selling items from 9 a.m. to noon.

Evening carillon recital Saturday
A special evening caril­lon recital will take place Saturday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Culver Academies’ Memorial Chapel. The per­formance, the only evening recital carillonneur John Gouwens will perform this year, is free and open to the public, and will feature music particularly suited to an evening atmosphere. At­tendees are invited to listen from the chapel lawn, and a guided tour of the carillon will take place following the recital.

Meet Culver’s town manager June 6
Residents may meet and greet Culver’s new town manager, David Schoeff, Wednesday, June 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lower level meeting room at the Culver Public Library. Re­freshments will be served and the public is invited to welcome Mr. Schoeff to the community.

Summer reading starts with wild animals June 6
Culver-Union Twp. Pub­lic Library’s summer read­ing program kicks off June 6 with a hands-on animal show from animal conser­vation/education organiza­tion, Indiana Wild. In ad­dition to regular Tuesday and Thursday storytimes, there will be a third story­time on Thursdays, weekly activities for the Culver Girls and Boys Club, and bi-weekly free lunches for children under 18 provid­ed by the Culver Comm. School Corp. Storytimes are at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided at 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Special activities include: teens making worry dolls July 13; a “Stuffed Animal Pajama Party” July 18; a library lock-in with pizza and games August 2 from 7 to 11 p.m.

Card-making class June 5
Marge Keltner will return with her card crafting skills Tuesday, June 5 at 10 a.m., to the Culver-Union Twp. Public Library. She will offer two cards for $5. Pre-registration is required. The
class is open to the public.

Book-film group June 6
Culver-Union Twp. Public Library’s book/film discus­sion group, “A Novel Approach,” will meet Wednesday, June 6 at noon in the library’s large meeting room, located downstairs at the library. Copies of the selection are avail­able at the circulation desk and may be reserved by con­tacting the library at 574-842-2941. Patrons are encour­aged to bring their lunch to eat while they enjoy the movie and the discussion afterwards.

Cole Porter concert, gala June 9
Some tickets are still available for the Cole Porter Radio Hour, Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m., at the Legion Memo­rial Building on Culver Academies’ cam

Bingo fundraiser June 10
A bingo fundraiser will be held at Culver’s VFW Post 6919 Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m. (doors open at 1 p.m.). The event will raise funds to send Culver Comm. High School sophomore Marshall Anderson to a soccer camp in Boston, Mass., this summer, a special opportunity for the starting goalie of the school. Cost is $10 for the first card and $1 for each additional card. There will be prizes from local merchants, lunch, and refreshments to purchase as well. Wesley pic­nic/brunch June 10
Wesley United Methodist Church’s 5th annual brunch and auction at the depot/town park will take place Sunday, June 10. Worship will start at 9 a.m., with brunch served at 10 and the live auction commencing at 11 a.m. Attend­ees are encouraged to bring personal items (such as sham­poo, toothpaste, and any other personal hygiene product or paper products) or a monetary donation for the brunch, which will go to the Culver food pantry.
The auction will include homemade pies, cakes, fresh produce, four Cubs tickets, Elizabeth’s Garden items, prints from the Painter and the Poet, a homemade quilt, and many more items. All are invited.

Kiwanis gilf outing June 14
Culver Kiwanis Club’s annual golf tournament and outing will take place Saturday, July 14, at Mystic Hills golf course in Culver. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Cost is $280 per foursome or $70 per person. Event coordinators are seeking additional sponsors for the event, which raises funds to support local youth and charities. Adult Summer Reading at CUTPL
Sign-ups for “Dreaming of a Good Book,” the Adult Summer Reading Program at Culver-Union Township Public Library, will begin Wed., May 30. The program willl start Wed., June 14 and run until Wed., Aug. 1. Points from log books will be calculated and high score winner will be announced Wed., Aug. 8. No materials will be counted before June 13. Rule changes are being imple­mented for the summer reading program, to be announced soon. Patrons must sign-up to be eligible for our weekly drawings.

CBGC auction June 15
The Culver Boys & Girls Club’s annual fundraiser, “Building Brighter Futures,” will take place Friday, June 15 at the Lay Dining Facility on the Culver Academies campus from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The evening includes a silent auction with over 175 items, buffet dinner, and a premier live auction. Entertainment will be provided by “Quick Change,” the magical transformation act seen on televi­sion and at professional sporting events.

Community meal at Grace June 15
Grace United Church of Christ will hold its monthly community meal on Friday, June 15 at 6 p.m. All are invit­ed to this free, ecumenical event whose purpose is to share a friendly meal in a welcoming, community atmosphere. The meals are held on the 15th day of each month in the basement of the church.

Kiwanis bass tournament June 16
The 8th annual Culver Kiwanis and Marco Bassmasters two-person team bass fishing tournament will be held Sat­urday, June 16 on Lake Maxinkuckee. Sponsored by Col­lins and Co. realtors and Culver Marina, the entry fee is $80 per team, with a 90 percent payout and $500 big bass guarantee. Check in at the Culver Marina begins at 5 a.m., and launch will be from Culver Marina. The event will benefit the youth of Marshall County, and the public is invited to the launch and weigh-in ceremonies. MCJFL sign-up dates
Culver’s Marshall County Junior Football League youth football sign-ups will take place June 16 ( 9 a.m. to noon), and June 23 (9 a.m. to noon). Please sign up at the open garage doors on the west side of the Culver Community High School. We are also looking for vol unteer coaches as well as event volunteers. Wastewater plant open house June 20
An open house for the public to visit the recently-reno­vated Culver wastewater treatment plant will be held June 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. on the south side of Culver. The plant recently underwent a largely grant-funded, nearly $1 mil­lion enhancement.

Monterey FD Hog Ride June 23
Monterey Fire Department is sponsoring its second annu­al “Hog Ride” motorcycle event Saturday, June 23, start­ing at the Monterey fire station. Tickets are $15 per person and $10 per passenger; riders eat for $5, and non-riders for $10. A hog roast will include live band and activities, and proceeds go to benefit the fire department.

CHS reunion June 22
The Culver High School reunion will take place Friday, June 22 at the Culver Elementary School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. Honored CHS classes will include those of 1967, 1962, 1957, 1952, 1947, 1942 and any other class ending with a “2” or “7,” though all alums are welcome.

Remembrance bricks
The Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver is accepting orders for Heritage Park Remembrance Bricks at Heritage Park, corner of Main and Jefferson Streets in Culver. Individuals may also order the bricks for their homes. All brick donations to the Society are tax deduct­ible. Bricks may be ordered from Charlotte Hahn, 574-842-3267. Order forms and a locator list of all the bricks in Heritage Park is available at the Center for Culver in the Culver Public Library.

Kiwanis raffle tickets available
Tickets are available for the Culver Kiwanis Club’s annu­al raffle to benefit local charities. Prizes include $35,000 towards the choice of a vehicle from Oliver Ford Lincoln of Plymouth, or $25,000 cash. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50, and are available at Osborne’s Mini-Mart and Park N’ Shop in Culver, or from members of Culver Kiwanis Club. Lake Max Challenge paddleboarding June 30
Culver will host Indiana’s first-ever World Paddle Board Association sanctioned Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) race Saturday, June 30 via the the Lake Max Challenge. The Lake Max Challenge will start at the beach lodge at Cul­ver’s town park, 819 E. Lake Shore Drive. Parking and launching will be off the east end of the town beach.
