Iwo Jima memorial service Feb. 23 in Indy

February 4, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — For most, Feb. 23 is just another day in February, but for some WWII Veterans, it is a reminder os something much more important. It marks the 66th year anniversary of the most historical day of WWII, the seizure of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan. Some Americans remember the historical flag-raising by five Marines and one Navy Corpsman, but few will understand the epic battle for Iwo Jima that cost the United States 4,590 lives and wounded 24,096 Marines and Sailors.
This Feb. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis, Detachment 1, Communication Company, United States Marine Corps from Peru, Ind., will pay tribute to all that served and sacrificed for the battle at Iwo Jima. All Iwo Jima and WWII veterans, their families and friends are invited to attend the service which will include a Marine Corps Color Guard and Rifle detail, music and band provided by Tipton High School, a social meet and greet with fellow veterans, a Mt. Suribachi flag-raising reenactment, 21-gun rifle salute, and guest of honor speech and Taps.
Iwo Jima vets that would like their name on the program should contact Staff Sergeant Justin Frank before Feb. 15 at justing.a.frank@2usmc.mil or by phone at 765-688-4421 and leave name, rank, phone number, address and number of guests attending. To support the event, contact Captain Markus Trouerbach at mark.trouerbacj@usmc.mil or by phone at 317-379-9797. Some of the service will be outside so attendees are reminded to dress accordingly.
