June 4, 2012

KNOX — Dale Hite, of Plymouth, was convicted of eight counts of criminal behavior Friday afternoon in Starke County Circuit Court. After three days of testimony, the jury brought back a guilty verdict on all eight charges: Two counts of resisting law enforcement resulting in death, Class B Felonies; two counts reckless homicide, Class C felonies; resisting law enforcement, Class D Felony; possession of methamphetamine, Class D Felony; failure to stop at a stop sign. Class C Infraction; failure to use headlights from sunset to sunrise, Class C Infraction.
Hite was on trial for an incident that happened Oct. 16, 2009, when the car he was driving crashed into some trees traveling at a speed of 124 mph.
According to court documents, police were at a Grovertown residence investigating the possibility of someone manufacturing methamphetamine. While looking for evidence, a car approached the home and then sped away.
The driver of the vehicle shut the lights off when law enforcement officials began to follow the car.
Two passengers were thrown from the car: Nicholas White and Amber McMillen, both of Plymouth. The victims died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
Hite had to be airlifted from the crash site.
Hite claimed he was not driving at the time the accident occurred. However, reports say evidence collected at the scene indicated he was the driver.
Currently Hite is in the Starke County Jail awaiting his June 26 sentencing hearing.
The proceedings are scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Starke County Circuit Court.
