Himes is Youth of the Year

May 13, 2011

PLYMOUTH — 17-year-old Brittney Himes is no stranger to the Boys & Girls Club of Marshall County.
“She has been coming here since she was 8 years old,” said Billie Treber, executive director.
Himes’ experience during her years as a member, a volunteer, and now as junior staff contributed to her being named the 2011 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. The award is given by the board of directors at the club, based on written recommendations by staff members. Criteria for the award includes club involvement as well as setting a good example.
Himes works part-time at the Club. During her time there, she has seen it all, she says.
“I work here about 13 hours a week,” said Himes. “The hardest part is when the kids have problems. We have little girls who can be kind of dramatic.”
Himes said that her favorite part of working at the Club is being a mentor to the kids.
“I interact with them, help them to be positive,” said Himes.
“Brittany is calm and collected and very well-rounded,” said Treber. “I know she will be successful in life because she strives to work really hard. She has been a good role model for the other kids and has had to overcome a lot of personal struggles.”
