BREMEN — Helen L. Johnson, 98, formerly of Riley Road, North Liberty and Sherman Street, Bremen, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011 in the Bremen Health Care Nursing Home, Bremen. She was born Sept. 17, 1912 in Marshall County to the late Wilbur Maxson and Beth “Bessie” (Armentrout) Phillips and lived in this area all of her life. March 19, 1932 in Plymouth, she married Chester Johnson, who preceded her in death Aug. 14, 1974.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by three daughters, Patsy M. Schlemmer of Bremen, Wanda L. (Galen) Mangus of North Liberty and Nancy L. (Norman Matuszak) McCartney of South Bend. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Mike (Barb) Gouker, Cindy (David) Leavell, Pam Gouker and Betsy Paul, Brenda (Rob) Schloneger, Sandra Mangus, Lorna Mangus, Rollo (Patsy) Mangus, Leo (Darlene) Mangus, Marlo (Lucinda) Mangus, Darro (Beth) Mangus, Dr. Lora (Todd) Wenger, Beverly Peebles, Neil (Jolie) McCartney, Brien McCartney, and Beth (Scott) Styers, 45 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren, and a brother, Arnold (Shirley) Phillips of Bremen. Two sisters, Ruth Roush and Opal Gardner and a granddaughter, Peggy Schlemmer Paul preceded Helen in death.
Mrs. Johnson was the eldest member of the Pine Creek Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed driving the tractor when helping on the farm, gardening, crocheting and volunteering in her church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine Creek Church of the Brethren, 69531 Pine Road, North Liberty, IN 46554. Burial will follow in Fair Cemetery, North Liberty. The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville and one hour prior to services at the church.
