Heckaman leads area athletes at girls state track meet

June 3, 2013

BLOOMINGTON — Say this for Leah Heckaman: She’s got a positive attitude.
Even though Heckaman had to face one of the toughest fields in years in the weight events, including a new state record holder in the discus, the Culver Academies junior was all smiles following Saturday’s IHSAA girls state track finals.
“I had a good day,” said Heckaman, who finished fifth in the discus and 10th in the shot put. “I knew what I wanted to do, and even if everything didn’t go perfect, I’m satisfied.”
Heckaman was Marshall County’s only medal-winner during the girls meet at Indiana University’s track in Bloomington. A Plymouth resident who attended LaVille Jr. High School before enrolling at Culver, she hit a big throw in the discus prelims – 134 feet, 9 inches – to guarantee herself a spot on the awards stand.
“This is the third year I’ve qualified for the state meet, but this is the first time I’ve won a medal, so yeah, that’s good,” said Heckaman. “I’ve never made the finals before, so to get there today in two events, I’m pretty happy.”
Heckaman finished 26th in the discus as a freshman and 15th as a sophomore, so she’s definitely headed in the right direction.
She also made the final round in the shot put. Though she had a good toss of 41 feet, 1-1/4 inches, she missed winning a medal by about five inches. Micaela Hazlewood of Linton-Stockton reached 41-7 ½ for ninth.
Just making the finals was an accomplishment in itself. In the discus, it took almost 130 feet to get there. And at the front of the pack, Lawrence Central’s Adriana Brown spun the platter further than ever before – 168 feet, 6 inches, shattering the state record of 165-4 set by Edgewood’s Stacy Martin in 1999.
Four girls in all broke the 140-foot barrier.
In the shot put, Martinsville’s Liz Iversen reached 46-10 ½ for the win.
But then, Saturday was one of those unusual meets where just about every state record was in danger. Three fell in all.
In the 4 x 800 relay, tiny Eastern High School of Greentown finished first in 8:53.74, becoming the first Hoosier team to break the 9-minute barrier.
Eastern’s Brittany Neeley also clocked 2:07.91 to set a new state meet record in the 800-meter run.
Mishawaka’s Anna Rohrer missed a state record by two-100ths of a second in the 3200-meter run. She clocked 10:20.68, scaring the record of 10:20.66 set by Waverly Neer of Culver Academies in 2011.
Fort Wayne Northrop scored 60 points to claim its 10th state title in school history, with Lawrence Central scoring 51 for second. Bellmont was third at 41. Athletes from the Fort Wayne regional dominated the meet.
Plymouth’s Meagan Fisher had a good day in the 800-meter run, clocking 2:17.76 to finish 13th overall. She missed a state medal by four places and about two seconds.
Fisher also led off Plymouth’s 4 x 800 relay, which finished 23rd. Libbie Read, Abby Patrick and Allie Wright came home in 9:51.66.
Sophomore Kaydon Fosler high jumped for Plymouth and cleared 5-1, but couldn’t negotiate 5-3 and ended up 24th.
In the 100-meter dash, Culver Community’s Denisha Brown clocked 12.70 in her trial heat but didn’t advance. She finished 19th overall.
