BREMEN — Dealing with the pressure of the state tournament is hard enough, but there was something even bigger looming in the minds of Bremen players Wednesday.
With head coach Andrew Rohde in Florida taking care of his mother after she underwent unexpected brain surgery to remove a tumor, the young Lions had to buckle down and focus on the task at hand in their Bremen Boys Tennis Sectional opener with LaVille. They did just that, beating the Lancers 4-1 in a repeat of an earlier Northern State Conference match to advance to play Triton today.
“What I wanted to say is just how hard it is for these guys because Andrew’s been such a good coach and such a good influence on them all year, and this came up unexpectedly,” said Bremen assistant coach Mark Wagner. “His mom and dad... they’ve been at every one of our matches this year so the boys know who they are, and it’s been really hard for our team to go through something where not only could their coach not be there with them, but the coach’s mother is seriously ill, so I’m really proud of them for playing like they did.”
