Health Dept. insurance requirements to change

January 18, 2012

PLYMOUTH — The Marshall County Health Department announced another change to immunization eligibility requirements Tuesday afternoon.
Under the new Indiana state guidelines effective Feb. 1, only those without medical insurance may be vaccinated at their local health department. Insured individuals (including children) must receive vaccinations from their normal physician.
These changes were originally slated to take place last summer, but were postponed until now.
Health department nurse Susan Lechlitner added that Marshall County will also begin charging an administrative fee Feb. 1 — $8 per shot, with a $50 cap per family.
“This will help cover expenses,” said Lechlitner. “Supplies are a big need (as well as) travel expenses for shot clinics (in the area).”
She noted that surrounding St. Joseph, Starke, and Pulaski counties charge similar fees. Vaccines will be given to eligible children regardless of the family’s ability to pay the new administrative fee, however.
“We will not turn anybody away,” said Lechlitner.
Vaccinations are available at the health department Monday and Tuesday of each week, by appointment only. For an appointment, call 574-935-8565.
New requirements are:
• If your insurance covers vaccinations partially or fully – you are not eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept. Contact your medical provider for your vaccine needs.
• If your insurance cap on vaccines has been met – you are eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept.
• If your insurance does not cover vaccinations - you are eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept.
• If your children are covered by Medicaid (regular or pkg C or secondary) you are eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept.
• If you are uninsured - you are eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept.
• If you are an Native American or Alaskan Native - you are eligible for vaccinations at your local Health Dept.
