Head Start bus hit by commercial flatbed

KNOX — Fourteen children and two adults, including the driver were taken to IU Health Starke Hospital this morning after the Marshall - Starke Head Start Bus they were traveling in, bus No. 37 was hit by a commercial flatbed vehicle.
Knox City Police are investigating the accident, which happened at the intersection of U.S. 35 and Lake Street, in Knox, at 7:57 a.m.
According to the police report, witnesses at the scene said the Marshall-Starke Head Start bus was crossing U.S. 35 and had the right away. The driver of the commercial flatbed allegedly blew the red light and crashed into the bus.
A representative of the hospital said all of the children were treated for minor injuries at IU Health Starke Hospital.
“Indiana University Health Starke Hospital saw 14 children and two adults this morning as a result of the accident. All 14 children have been seen and some were treated for minor bumps and bruises at the IU Health Starke Hospital Emergency Room. All 14 children have been released to their parents. As of this point, all of those involved in the collision have been discharged from the hospital, including the adults," said Neil Mangus, director of marketing, La Porte and Starke Indiana University Health.
The driver of the commercial truck was uninjured.
The names of the drivers are not being released until family has been notified. The accident remains under investigation, and drug and alcohol tests are pending.
The Knox City police Department was assisted by Starke County EMS, Knox Fire Department and the Starke County Sheriff's Department.
