Harvey, Howe advance at state wrestling finals

February 19, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Plymouth’s Damon Howe and Culver Community’s Jeremiah Harvey made heavyweight statements Friday on the first night of the IHSAA individual state wrestling finals.
Each pinned his first-round opponent in less than 30 seconds as the 73rd annual tournament opened at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Harvey, a senior, pinned Huntington North’s Andrew Mason in 24 seconds. Howe, also a senior, stuck Fort Wayne North Side’s Ta’quan Walker in 0:29.
Wrestling resumes this morning at 9:30 a.m., with the finals slated for 7 p.m. this evening. Any wrestler who wins a first-round match is guaranteed an IHSAA awards medal and a spot on the awards podium this evening. The only question is: how far up?
Bremen’s Abraham Hall almost made it three Marshall County heavyweights in the quarterfinals, but he dropped a 4-2 overtime decision to Bellmont’s Daniel Meyer, who is ranked No. 1 in the state. Hall closes his season with a 38-8 record.
Harvey (42-4) faces Tyler Melby of Westfield in this morning’s quarterfinals. Howe (34-2) is up against undefeated Willie Henson of Indianapolis North Central.
Culver Academies’ sophomore Anthony McHugh (40-4) dropped an 8-3 decision to Evansville Memorial’s Logan Wedding in his 119-pound opener. Cody Strange of John Glenn (39-9) fell to Tyler Rickenbaugh of Heritage Hills, 10-2.
