ROCHESTER — Harold D. Gardner, 92, of Rochester, formerly of Argos, died Nov. 13, 2012 at 9:35 p.m. at Life Care Center of Rochester. He had been in declining health for a couple of years.
He was born Dec. 26, 1919 in Tyner to Ben and Blanche (Sponseller) Gardner. He lived in the Argos community all of his adult life.
He first married Caroline Sinclair who preceded in 1958; he then married Velma Smith Dec. 23, 1960 in Akron.
He was a farmer and worked at Studebaker as a pressman.
He was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethren, Argos; and a Life Time member of the American Legion.
Harold served in the United States Army during WWII with the 3rd Armored Division and was a Prisoner of War in Germany at the conclusion of the war.
He was a graduate of Argos High School with the class of 1938.
He is survived by a daughter – Christine Doss and husband Jim of Jacksonville, Ill.; sons — Michael Gardner and wife Lynn of Shannon, Ill.; and Scott Gardner of Argos; stepdaughters — Annabel Marshall of Mentone; Jeanette Clementson of Sebring, Fla.; Doris Newcomer and husband Bob of Rochester; Donna Arven and husband Richard of Crestview, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother — Vern Gardner; and stepsons Dale Horn and Robert Horn.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos, officiated by Rev. Robert E. Rice Jr. of the Walnut Church of the Brethren.
