Happening in Culver this Memorial Day weekend and next week (May 27-30)

In addition to Monday's Memorial Day observations at Culver's Masonic cemetery and Culver Academies, here are some of this weekend's local activities.

CCHS ‘Musical’ this wkd

Culver Community High School’s choral department will present Disney’s "High School Musical" May 28 and 29, in the high school auditorium. Tickets are on sale this week ($5 advance, $6 at the door). Call 574-842-3391 ext. 3118 for tickets, or contact any choral student.

Choir on TV Sunday

Audiences will have a chance to see the Culver Academies choir on television Sunday, May 29, on WHME-TV 46 in South Bend at 11 a.m. Eastern time, on the "Worship for Shut-ins" show. The program will also air on DIRECTV Channel 377 at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time, or can be viewed online anytime at www.worshipforshutins.org. The choir’s appearance, in observance of Memorial Day, will include the songs, "Ain’t a that Good News!" and "Deep River."

Church sale this wkd

Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, located on State Road 10 just east of Culver, will hold a sale at the church May 27 and 28 (the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Available will be everything from tools, antiques, and clothing, to furniture, lawn mowers, weedeaters, electronics, and much more. The sale will be both outside on the church lawn and inside the church basement, rain or shine.

Charity Chairs due Friday

Completed chairs for the Culver Tri Kappa Chairs for Charity auction may be dropped off at the Burke residence at the corner of Academy Road and Lake Shore Drive from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 27 (Call Judy Sawhook if it’s impossible to make it on Friday). The chairs will be delivered to local businesses where they will be on display until the auction. The auction will be held Sunday, June 12 at the Culver Academies’ Lay Dining Center with the reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the live auction starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $20 and may be purchased from Rhonda Anderson, 574-842-2169, Judy Sawhook, 574-842-2861, or any other Tri Kappa member. Tickets will also be available at the door.

"Little Women" at Academies

The Culver Academies student production of "Little Women" will take place May 28 and June 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m., at Culver Academies Eppley Auditorium. The free performance is open to the public.

Culver Buzzer Assasins will live-blog this wkd from Atlanta tournament

National History Bowl Director and Jeopardy Champion David Madden travelled to Culver to deliver the Eagles’ Indiana State Championship and National Quarterfinalist trophies to Quizbowl Coach Phil Blessman. Team Captain Andrew Van Duyn was also honored for his History Bee Indiana State Championship and National Top 16 finish. Mr. Madden was a guest moderator at the Quizbowl Midwest Championship held at Culver on May 14, where the Eagles finished as consolation bracket champions. This Saturday and Sunday, the Culver Buzzer Assasins will compete at the NAQT National Championship in Atlanta, GA. The tournament will be live-blogged and the team will be tweeting about its progress during the day (follow along @BuzzerAssassins).
