Grace Patterson Gibbs
June 25, 1915-June 20, 2012
DANVILLE â€”Â Grace Patterson Gibbs went to be with the Lord June 20, 2012, just five days shy of her 97th birthday. She was born June 25, 1915 to Finley Oscar Patterson and Nora Agnes Worthington Patterson in North Liberty. She attended Polk Township High School at Tyner and graduated from Manchester College with a degree in elementary education in 1935. Grace taught first grade at LaPaz until she married James Gordon Gibbs Sr. Dec. 25, 1937. She also taught at Lizton and Danville schools during her career. Grace and Gordon had three children; J. â€śJayâ€ť Gordon Gibbs Jr. (Shirley), Beverly Dawn Gibbs Reiger (Roger), Dennis Leon Gibbs (Lou Anne). Grace is predeceased by her husband Gordon, her parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Oral Patterson, and her granddaughter, Bethany Gibbs. An active member of First Baptist Church in Danville, Grace was also a member of Tri Kappa Sorority, Browning Club, Up to Date Club, Hendricks County Garden Club and Indiana State Garden Club, and the Friends Bridge Club for more than 50 years.
Grace is survived by her children, 12 grandchildren; James Gordon Gibbs III (Janine), Paula Schmidt (George), Justin Gibbs (Cheryl), Dawn Hoffman (Rick), Alicia Mederich, Curtis Reiger, Brandon Reiger, Leah Burnside (Ben), Matthew Gibbs, Nathan Gibbs, Joshua Gibbs (Beth), Sarah Castillo (Rique) and 19 great-grandchildren. Ever the graceful lady, Graceâ€™s name fit her well. Quick witted and always ready with an encouraging smile she was a wonderful woman of God and a devoted, loving mother and grandmother. Grace will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012 in Baker Funeral Home, Danville, with burial to follow in Danville South Cemetery. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012 in the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.bakerfuneralservice.com.
