Glenn marches to semi-state

October 22, 2010

WALKERTON — John Glenn’s marching band is no stranger to success.
Trips to the state finals in class D of the ISSMA state tournament in 1999, 2000 and 2006 had set the stage, but after moving up to class C the band had to adjust to the competition with bigger schools. This year’s band has reaped the benefit of that tradition, making it through the regional competition and on to the semi-state at Plainfield.
“We are really excited,” said Dan Fortlander, band director at Glenn about its success. “This is fall break and we’ll be practicing from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Thursday) and we’ll practice from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Friday), perform at the football game and then off to the semi-state on Saturday. It’s like, ‘Vacation? What vacation?’”
The band advanced out of the regional at Lafayette and Fortlander feels the best could be ahead for his group.
“We feel pretty good about it and maybe a little surprised. We’ve had some struggles this year but we’ve risen above that,” he said. “I’m hoping that we have a chance to advance to the state this week. We’ve played well but we haven’t peaked yet. I feel like our best performance could still be ahead of us.”
