Foust leads Fairfield over Bremen, 58-43

BREMEN — Bremen led 24-21 at the half, but Tanner Foust took over after the break as Fairfield claimed a 58-43 win over the Lions at Bremen Saturday.
Foust went 6 of 7 from the field in the second half for 16 of his game-high 24 points. His alley-oop layup at the 5:32 mark of the third frame put the Falcons up for good.
“He was kind of in the rhythm, and he was finding little seams and things,” said Fairfield head basketball coach John Wysong. “We didn’t tell him anything special (at halftime), just try to keep even-keel.”
“They jumped on us pretty quickly in that second half,” said Bremen head coach Kyle Hanyzewski. “We didn’t have a great start to the game, and we were able to weather that storm and get the lead by halftime. We didn’t have a great start to the third quarter, and we couldn’t weather that storm. You look at Foust, I told him after the game I’ve never been so happy to see somebody graduate because that kid is tough.”
Fairfield also got a boost on the defensive end, holding Bremen to 7-of-21 shooting from the floor and point guard Ben Hueni to just two points in the second half following a 12-point performance before the break.
“We thought we had to defend them a little better,” said Wysong. “Especially Hueni was driving us nuts. Team-wise we just didn’t do a very good job with him.”
“Hueni’s having a heck of a year, he really is,” said Hanyzewski. “We got him confident in his scoring, now we’ve got to get him to understand how to score when he’s the focal point of the defense.”
Jacob Box finished with 12 points — including three 3s — and Ethan Pike had nine for Bremen.
Derek Vogelzang tallied 12 behind Foust for Fairfield.
Fairfield improves to 7-9 on the season, while Bremen slips to 3-12. The Lions resume Northern State Conference play at Class A, No. 2 Triton Thursday.
“We’d better be ready to handle pressure in a whole new way. (Triton coach) Jason (Groves) does an unbelievable job over there,” Hanyzewski said. “We are getting better, though. The second half we kind of took a step backwards, but what better way to see how far you’ve come than to play Triton?”
