Fourth quarter costs Bremen in turnover-filled loss to Rochester

January 9, 2013

BREMEN — The Bremen Lady Lions lost a hard-fought, turnover-filled game to the Rochester Lady Zebras Tuesday night by a score of 45-36.
The two teams combined for 54 turnovers in the game with both teams getting after it on the defensive end.
After three, the Lady Lions only trailed by three, 32-29, but sloppy play in the fourth quarter cost them the game.
Bremen committed eight turnovers in the final period, and Rochester was able to capitalize and hit 5-of-8 free throws down the stretch to close out the game 45-36. “The fourth quarter we struggled with turnovers,” said Bremen coach Tonya Lucchese. “In the third quarter we got back in the game, but the third quarter is what hurt us.”
Rochester started the game on a 6-2 run, but Bremen was able to close the gap and make it a three-point ball game with the Zebras leading 10-7 after one.
Rochester’s offense came alive in the second quarter as it was able to push its lead to 26-15 with freshman Alexa Holland scoring seven points in the quarter. Bremen came back in the second half with a fullcourt pressure defense that slowed down the Lady Zebras.
“We work on the fullcourt press every day in practice,” says Bremen coach Tonja Lucchese. “We started to implement that, and the girls really enjoy getting after it. I think it helps keep up our intensity on defense.”
Bremen made the game close in the third quarter behind the shooting of junior Sara Slabaugh, who scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter.
Alexa Holland led a balanced Rochester scoresheet with 10 points. Rochester is now 8-7.
Behind Slabaugh’s 16, Ashley Lucchese scored 12 with three steals, and Brooke Snyder finished with a game-high nine rebounds for the Lady Lions, who move to 1-12. They will travel to John Glenn on Friday at 7:30.
