Fast start leads Cats past Westville

January 6, 2011

HAMLET — With senior leader Justyne Kranenburg sidelined, Oregon-Davis wanted to get off to an especially good start Wednesday.
The Class A No. 5 Lady Cats wasted no time putting a big, fat check mark next to that item on the to-do list.
Powered by its swarming full-court press, OD turned the opening minutes into a layup drill, rattling off a stunning 40 points in the first quarter — 22 off of 13 Westville turnovers — and cruised to a 78-32 girls basketball win over the visiting Blackhawks at The Den.
“We started out the way we wanted to do,” OD head coach Terry Minix said. “With Justyne out we really stressed getting off to a fast start, and we did. We wanted to build some confidence for someone like Alicia (McIntosh) who’s used to giving us that spark off the bench but was starting tonight.
“We did a better job of running our break tonight; it did look like a layup drill at times,” he added. “We got some good shots.”
OD placed four players in double figures, topped by freshman Jesse Averone with a game-best 28 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, and three assists. The 5-foot-7 guard capped off a personal 14-point first-frame outburst with a buzzer-beating trey off of a feed from McIntosh to put the Cats up 40-15 at the quarter stop.
