Fall play at BHS ‘funny with a message’

BREMEN — Family oddities take center stage for Bremen High School’s fall play, “You Can’t Take It With You.”
Director Mindi Slone said the comedy in three acts will have the audience “walking away laughing.”
“The Sycamore family is an eclectic, strange family,” said Slone, explaining the plot of the show. “They have one normal daughter, Alice, who falls in love with a normal boy. Alice then meets her boyfriend’s family, which is very uptight and proper.”
The play is set in 1936 in New York City. The cast of 19 includes some seniors as well as a few students who have never acted before.
“For many of them, this is their first time on stage,” said Slone. “Since we are small school, we kind of recruited some students we thought would do a good job. We can tell some of them have been bitten by the bug — they want to keep (acting). It’s pretty cool.”
The biggest challenge in rehearsing for the show, said Slone, was working around her cast’s schedules. Most of the cast is involved in other extracurricular activities such as sports or band. Rehearsal is held Monday though Thursday after school.
The most experienced actor in the play is senior Jarred Fitch. He plays “Grandpa” Martin Vanderhof.
“This is a very funny show,” said Slone. “It’s a funny show with a message. It makes you appreciate people who are quirky.”
The play opens Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Additional shows are Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. All tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
