Falcons shut out Knox

April 30, 2013

KNOX — John Glenn traveled to Knox Monday night and dismantled the Redskins in five innings by a 10-0 score.
Glenn’s Justin Gierlowski threw his second no-hitter of the season and recorded his third double-digit strikeout game with 10 ks. With his offspeed pitches setting up his fastball, Gierlowski controlled the game. But it was a one-out walk to Knox’s Scott Trojan in the fifth that ruined his perfect game.
The Falcons plated three runs in the first against Redskins’ starter Nick Singleton, when Drew McDonald singled, stole second, and was followed by Mark Einhorn, who drew a walk. Kyle Liedtky moved them up a base before Gierlowski singled, driving both home.
After a double by David Jaworski and a hit batter in Austin Bloss, Tyler Niespodziany popped to first baseman Jeremy Crittendon in foul territory, allowing Gierlowski to tag and score under a high throw home.
It was the fourth inning that saw 10 Falcons come to the plate and produce. McDonald singled, Einhorn hit a double, Liedtky was hit and Gierlowski walked. After Jaworski hit a sharp grounder that forced Einhorn when shortstop Trojan threw home, Bloss drew a walk, bringing in Liedtky.
After Niespodziany struck out, Cole Kaser drew a walk, followed by Ryan Price’s two-RBI single. McDonald ended the inning on a deep fly that centerfielder Davey Johnson ran down.
The final two runs came in the fifth when both Einhorn and Liedtky singled and Gierlowski walked. Bloss reached on an error before Niespodziany lined a double.
Even after the outcome was decided, both teams are still in the hunt for the Northern State Conference crown with Glenn sitting at 5-2 in the conference and Knox at 4-2.
