Falcons serve up defeat of South Bend Clay

August 25, 2011

WALKERTON — A volleyball team’s first, and sometimes best, weapon is its serve.
That was certainly the case for John Glenn Wednesday as the Lady Falcons handed visiting South Bend Clay a 25-20, 25-10, 22-25, 25-8 defeat.
Led by Anna Schmalzried’s six aces and Stephanie Radandt’s four, Glenn recorded 65-of-78 serving efficiency in the win.
“We’re not very tall, so we have to serve tough and play good defense,” said Glenn head volleyball coach Merly Meares.
Schmalzried served 14 straight points as the Falcons broke a 9-9 tie to run away with Game 2, and she also led her team in setting with 15 assists, while middle hitter Radandt put away an eye-popping 21 kills to complement a balanced 16 digs on defense, and Amanda Bogard recorded 13 digs.
“Anna served really well. I think she served 14 points in (Game 2),” said Meares. “Steph is our go-to person. Amanda’s been playing really good defense, good serve receive.”
The Falcons led throughout Wednesday’s match except in Game 3, where they swapped leads five times with the Colonials, ultimately succumbing to a 6-0 game-ending run to fall 25-22 after taking a two-game lead.
But the team took some lessons from a Northern State Conference match with Jimtown on Tuesday night to refocus and put Clay away in Game 4.
“Last night we let Game 4 slip away at Jimtown. It was one or two points the whole way through it, and I think we just made a couple mistakes at the end. We really should have won that match in four last night,” said Meares.
“Game 3, I think we just lost our focus a little bit. We won the first two games, and I think we just let up a little bit and didn’t play as hard. We definitely refocused. That’s something we talk about a lot is staying focused and on track and getting another win in.”
Glenn moves to 2-1 on the year and resumes NSC play as it hosts Triton at 6 p.m. tonight.
