Falcons hope early schedule pays off at sectional

February 22, 2011

WALKERTON – John Glenn’s boys basketball team plays a brutal early-season schedule for such a time as this.
With a Class 3A Sectional 19 first-round tilt against Mishawaka Marian set, and a second-round meeting with Culver Military Academy awaiting the winner, the Falcons (10-8) hope that non-conference slate pays dividends now.
“We told our kids this is why we schedule the way we have for the first five or six games of the season,” Glenn head coach Travis Hannah said. “They’ve been through that type of meat grinder. Hopefully, they can draw on that experience.
“It’s not an easy draw, but I’m not sure there is an easy draw,” he added. “Like every other team, we just need to be playing our best.”
Sophomore guard Demetrius Jackson (23.9 ppg) leads the high-scoring Knights (13-6). Robert Mischler and Coley Schultheis also average double figures for Marian.
“Demetrius Jackson, he’s the real deal,” Hannah said. “He may be the best I’ve seen this year. It all starts with his penetration, and then they have two kids on the perimeter who can shoot. If they have a weakness it’s inside, which is good because that’s our weakness, too. If we can do a good job on Jackson’s penetration and get out on their shooters, we’ll be all right. I really think our kids will compete.”
Hannah points to Marian and CMA as sectional favorites but views each squad in the seven-team field as a contender.
“Marian’s playing as well as anybody in our area the last couple of weeks,” Hannah said. “CMA getting (7-foot-1 Chier Ajou) back makes a difference. Those two teams stand out, but St. Joe is physical; Rochester is always good; and Plymouth’s on its home floor. I think New Prairie could be a sleeper. Pick a team. It’s going to come down to who gets hot.”
