BOURBON — Former resident of Bourbon, Edmond, Okla. and current resident of Florence, S.C. died June 22, 2012 at The Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence, S.C.
Elsie Kathleen Kirby was born Dec. 4, 1922 in the family home at Pacolet Mills, S.C. in Spartanburg County. Kathleen was the first child of MayBelle Seay Kirby and Archie Kirby. She attended South Carolina Local Schools and graduated from Fair Forest High School in the class of 1939.
As a World War II Veteran, Kathleen served in the U.S. Navy Waves enlisting in December, 1942. She was in the Second Class of Waves to be accepted for duty and received training at Iowa State Teachers College, the U.S. Naval Base at Memphis, Tenn. and the U.S. Naval Base at Pensacola, Fla. She met her husband, Lt. Charles E. Hanes at Pensacola, Fla. and they were married May 24, 1944 at Laguna Beach, Calif. Following the end of World War II, Charles and Kathleen moved to Indiana where they bought a farm and raised their family of three children. Their children are Larry (Lynn) Hanes of South Carolina, Dr. Michael (Madlyn) Hanes of Pennsylvania, and Patricia Hanes (Dr. Louis) Furmanski of Oklahoma. A devout and life-long Methodist, Kathleen was very active in her church and served in many offices.
Survivors include the children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister Frances Kirby Plexico, and her brothers Talmadge Kirby and Billy M. Kirby all of South Carolina. Mrs. Hanes was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents and a brother, James Kirby.
Arrangements are by Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home in Bourbon. Services will be held Friday, June 29, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 204 N. Washington St., Bourbon with Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry officiating. Burial will follow in the Sand Ridge Cemetery at Bourbon.
