Driver of truck involving 2 fatalities released

Steve D. Cambe, 44, of Wheatfield, has been released from the Starke County Jail with no charges currently pending against him.
"Cambe was held for questioning, pending the results of a toxicology screen and the Indiana State Police Accident Reconstruction Report," said Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff.
"He has officially been released. At this time, we're waiting on the results of a blood draw. Although the test for alcohol showed that Mr. Cambe had none in his system, the test for controlled substances and prescription medication takes longer and must be sent to the State Department of Toxicology in Indianapolis, "Bourff said.
Bourff said the results of the additional analysis on the blood will take longer than the allotted time a person can be held.
"This testing will take longer than the 48 hours we're allowed to hold a person without finding probable cause," said Bourff.
Tentatively, police have not found evidence at the scene to warrant detaining Cambe.
"After we investigated the crash site at night, a further review of the scene in the daylight was appropriate. We determined we were not going to file formal charges of Reckless Homicide or any other crime at this time," said Bourff.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
