MENTONE — Doris Eileen Cooper, 80, of Mentone, died at 8:23 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at the Bremen Health Care Center of Bremen.
She was born Aug. 23, 1930 in Etna Green, to Glen Snider and Ethel M. Easterday.
She was married Oct. 15, 1950 in Mentone, to David L. Cooper who passed away Jan. 31, 2000.
Doris was the youngest of six children. She graduated from Mentone High School in 1949. She made Mentone her home for most of her adult life, spending time in Michigan as a young mother and Air Force wife and several warm and wonderful winters in Sebring, Fla. during retirement.
She worked as a secretary and telephone operator in early years. She devoted herself to her family as a stay-at-home wife and mother while her three children were small, and again did secretarial work. Later, she joined her husband and in-laws in the family business, Cooper Dept. Store in Mentone. When they closed the store, she ran her own craft and T-shirt business in Rochester. She also managed her own craft shows in the Logansport Mall and Marion Mall.
When semi-retired, she and her husband delivered vans for Explorer Van of Warsaw, driving to many locations throughout the United States. She was a longtime member of the Mentone United Methodist Church and was best known for her sense of humor and her feisty attitude. She loved doing crafts in her spare time and was most fond of being a “snow-bird” in Florida.
She is survived by daughters, Debra Spencer of Mentone, and Denise and husband Ray Driver of Plymouth; son, Daniel Cooper and wife Katherine of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren: David Spencer of Rochester, Dustin Spencer of Warsaw, and Deanna (Spencer) Wilkins of Ft. Wayne; two great-grandchildren, Lathen and Landen Spencer; and sisters, Mary Thomas of South Bend, and Kate Whetstone of Ft. Wayne.
