Culver Relay for Life 2011 kicks off

February 10, 2011

Culver's fourth annual Relay for Life, scheduled for April 15, had its official community kick off recently at the depot-train station at Culver's Town Park.
In addition to American Cancer Society representative Trisha Metz, several Culver Academies student organizers of the all-night event -- which raises funds for the American Cancer Society's ongoing fight against the disease -- addressed the audience.
Once again Culver's Relay will take place at Culver Academies' track and football field. In its first years, the event surpassed many expectations by raising more than $100,000 each year for the ACS, while simultaneously bringing together hundreds of participants from the various aspects of Culver's diverse community.
Team Development Chair Marin Barnes said her previous stint as a Relay team captain "was one of the most personally fulfilling things I've ever done," and encouraged community members to head up teams. Four short meetings will be held this year for team captains, she said, between now and the Relay event. Details about those meetings and more can be found at the Culver Relay website at www.relayforlife.org/culverin, or by emailing relay@culver.org.
Student organizer Riley Scott acknowledged this year's "difficult financial times present fundraising challenges, but now more than ever people need the American Cancer Society. Everyone has been touched by cancer. You are helping light more birthday candles by participating in Relay!"
Audience member Sally Flora thanked the organizers for their efforts, noting she lost both parents and a 15-year-old brother to cancer. "You do make a difference," she added.
