Mark Damore Jr. wants to say "thank you" to the Culver community, and part of that appreciation he hopes to express by way of enhancing Culver's night life .

"I was initially told that live music wasn't worth it," says the owner of the Lakehouse Grille at 620 E. Lake Shore Drive, "but I dabbled in it and my perception is, it's absolutely worth it. We might not have seen an uptake in sales, but we see many of the same and then some new faces.

"Everything comes and goes in waves, but I really believe Culver needs, respects, and deserves consistency."

Towards that end, Damore has set aside a "big" budget for weekly live entertainment at the former Edgewater Grille he revamped and relaunched one year ago.

He adds that Culver's citizens and visitors "need a place to meet and have a good time," though he emphasizes he plans to keep it classy and controlled.

"We're not trying to dirty this place up. We have not had any problems; we police it...to me it's neat that you can maintain a classy atmosphere but still have a great time. Anybody can play loud music and make a mess and sell dollar beers. I want to attract the right crowd."

However, he emphasized everyone's welcome regardless of looks, income, or background.

"Every person is welcome. However, there is a certain expectation of behavior at the Lakehouse."

He also points out he's realigning the location and logistics of live bands to "control noise concerns" at the restaurant and bar.

The Lakehouse Grille, which encompasses the old Lakeview Tavern, will celebrate its one year anniversary with a special event Saturday, May 11, when CCHS grad Kevin McDaniel will play live in the bar (his specialty is oldies) from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, after which DJ Tim will play in the dining room. Food and drink specials will accompany Lakehouse "swag" giveaways.

Additionally, the Lakehouse will begin to offer lunch six days per week, starting this week and through Labor Day.

"That's another form of saying 'thank you' to the Culver community and our patrons," he notes.

There will be major additions to the menu, Damore explains, including the ORBD Burger, which allows him to partner with his father's popular local eatery, the Original Root Beer Stand (hence the ORBS). The burger is a Lakehouse double cheeseburger with the root beer stand's popular dog sauce.

"I am really trying to unify the three different aspects of Culver," Damore says. "The Academy, the lakers, and the locals. All three come here. Entertainment is one way to do that."

Information about that event and more can be found online at www.facebook.com/TheLakehouseGrille.

In addition to karaoke every other Friday (May 3, 11, 24, and 31; June 7 and 21; July 5 and 19; and Aug.. 2, 16, and 30), live performances this spring and summer at the Lakehouse typically start at 10 p.m. and are free of charge. They include:
