CMA wins first-ever semistate title

March 21, 2011

HUNTINGTON — The Eagles recovered from a tough start that included six first-quarter turnovers to take a slim 35-34 lead into the final period and hold on for the eventual 51-49 win over Columbia City at the Class 3A Huntington North Semistate Saturday.
Juwan Brescacin's two-handed slam dunk off a Hayes Barnes pass in transition with under three seconds on the game clock put the exclamation point on Culver Military Academy's first semistate championship.
The Eagles entered Sectional 19 play on March 4 having never won a sectional championship and have since ticked off five straight wins en route to their first state berth. CMA will play the winner of Saturday's other 3A semistate contest between Batesville and Washington.
