MENTONE — Charles Lee Shoemaker of 7593 West 600 South, Mentone, died at 1:45 a.m. Friday Nov. 11, 2011 at the age of 91. Charles was born July 8, 1920 in Burket to Ted and Ruth (Jones) Shoemaker. He married Pauline May Middaugh of Argos, Feb. 14, 1942 she survives.
He lived in the Burket community most of his life. He was a WWII veteran and entered the Army in October of 1942. He had six months of schooling at Camp Campbell, Ky. Then was sent overseas six months to Bath, England. Six months before D-Day they entered Normandy Beach Head, France and went through five countries in Europe. He received five Bronze Battle Stars and many ribbons. He received his Honorable Discharge in October, 1945.
Charles owned and operated Shoemaker’s Aluminum for 30 years. He and his wife Pauline spent 26 winters going to Florida. He loved fishing, but his first love was farming.
He is survived by his wife Pauline Shoemaker of Mentone, and one brother Howard and wife Berniece Shoemaker of Roann. He was preceded in death by, his mother Ruth Shoemaker who died Jan. 30, 1936, his father Sheldon (Ted) Shoemaker who died Nov. 10, 1970. Two brothers Kenneth Shoemaker, Mentone who died July 14, 1999 and James Shoemaker, Roann who died April 5, 1986.
Services for Charles Lee Shoemaker will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday Nov. 14, 2011 at King Memorial Home 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Rev. Gary Loy officiating. Burial will take place in the Palestine Cemetery where Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Warsaw. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday Nov. 13, 2011 at King Memorial Home.
