Chairs aren’t just for sitting as Culver preps for gala event

With the Tri Kappa Chairs for Charity auction now just a month away, creative residents throughout the community are at work getting their chairs ready to donate. One of many that are already complete is this beautiful example by Gary Schaffer. The seat is a painting of the King’s Colors from our first U.S. Flag, The Grand Union 1775.
The Chairs Auction will be held Sunday, June 12 at the Culver Academies’ Lay Dining Center with the reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the live auction starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are, again this year, only $20 and may be purchased from Rhonda Anderson, 574-842-2169, Judy Sawhook, 574-842-2861, or any other Tri Kappa member. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Completed chairs may be dropped off at the Burke residence at the corner of Academy Road and Lake Shore Drive, across the street from the Lake Shore Clinic, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 27 (Call Judy Sawhook if it’s impossible to make it on Friday). On Saturday, the chairs will be delivered to local businesses where they will be on display until the auction.
Those who attended the event two years ago were likely astounded at the wide array of amazingly decorated chairs. There is talk that at least one desirable from the previous auction is going to be re-donated this year as the owner is changing her décor and is anxious to replace it at the auction with a new one – or two.
Event posters and handouts will soon be appearing throughout the community. To help with our chair number count, if you are going to be donating a chair please let Judy Sawhook know at or 574-842-2861. Each individual who donates a chair will receive a gratis ticket to the event. The community is looking forward to your creations.
