CGA runner Neer finally able to leave doubts behind her
CULVER — Runner Waverly Neer has been carrying something of a chip on her shoulder for a long time.
After securing All-American status with one of the top Indiana high school times ever at the 2010 Foot Locker Cross Country National Finals, maybe she can finally begin to put some of her doubts to rest.
The Culver Girls Academy senior seized 14th at the Foot Locker Nationals with a 17:51 at Balboa Park in San Diego, Cal. on December 11. The pace was the fastest of any runner in CGA history and fifth all-time by any Indiana runner at the girls meet.
“I knew coming through the two-mile that I could get All-American. I just thought to myself, ‘Wow, my dream for the whole season is coming true. I just need to end up hanging on.’ I was really just feeling great, and I was like ‘Just go for it; you have nothing to lose.’ I put myself in position with a little bit of a pack ahead of me. Going up the hill I took it a little bit more conservative and when I got to the more gradual part I kind of took off to see what I could do. With about 400 to go, Coach (Michael) Chastain and my dad were both there just yelling at me that ‘You’re All-American, just hold on for the last 400!’ I just kicked. I don’t remember much of what happened in the last part of that race.
