CGA polo team to compete in national tilt

March 6, 2013

STORRS MANNSFIELD, Conn. — The Culver Girls Academy interscholastic polo team will compete in the United States Polo Association Girls’ National Interscholastic Championship Tournament this week at the Horsebarn Hill Arena at the University of Connecticut.
Culver faces off against wild card selectee Newport (Rhode Island) in the opener when the event kicks off Thursday as the best high school girls teams in the country compete to showcase the growing landscape of women’s polo.
The tournament continues Friday with UConn playing Maui and defending national champion Maryland waiting to play the winner of the Culver-Newport match-up. Consolation matches are Saturday with the championship set for 10 a.m. ET Sunday.
CGA made its way to the national tourney after capturing the Central Regional with a 9-5 victory over Houston on Sunday, Feb. 17 following the Eagles’ 21-3 rout of the Longhorn Club of Houston Friday evening. It was the second time Culver hosted the three-day, four-team tournament.
CGA seniors Eleanor Logue and Natalie Hogan of South Bend and Plymouth, respectively, were named to the regional all-star team, and Cuckoo was named the top polo pony for the second straight year.
The USPA Girls’ National Interscholastic Championship tournament is part of the USPA Interscholastic/Intercollegiate (I/I) polo program, which has experienced tremendous recent growth, including 31 new teams from 2010 to 2012, for a total of 113 going into this season.
