Cathie Sue Gorden
Nov. 7, 1952 – Jan. 2, 2014
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla, — Cathie Sue Gorden, 61, of Daytona Beach, passed away on Jan. 2, 2014 after her two year battle with cancer at her “Vacation Home”. Cathie was born Nov. 7, 1952 in Plymouth, Ind. to Carl and Betty (Dipert) Coplen.
She graduated Plymouth High School in Indiana and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Ball State University. She taught high school home economics and coached girls’ sports before finding her true passion in interior design.
Cathie has been a resident of Volusia County since the early 1980’s. Her home away from home was the Halifax River Yacht Club. It was there that she excelled as the overall Entertainment Chairman for several years. Her interior design talents helped decorate many homes and boats. She founded and headed up the Biker’s Bash, Mardi-Gras, the infamous New Year’s Day Chili Cook-off, Carlos and Charles as well as many other functions and parties.
One of her true passions was sailing, she captained her sailboat, “Red Sky”, and was also a member of an all-woman crew on “Donna-Jean” that motored from Daytona Beach to Charleston, SC. She was also a member of the Tillandsia Garden Club, the Halifax Sailing Association and the infamous Sowing Circle.
Cathie is survived by her very special and dear friend Dan Snyder, her parents Carl and Betty Coplen, her son Trenton (Stacy) Glaub, N. Palm Beach, Fla., sister, Pat (Don) Bodensteiner, Rapid City, S.D., brother, Jerry (Mary Alice) Coplen, Dowaigiac, Mich., granddaughter, Marlynn Glaub, brother-in-law, Tom Kowalski, several nieces and nephews. She was loved and assisted by her extended family at the Terrace of Daytona Beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gary Gordon, her sister Carolyn (Coplen) Kowalski, and her nephew Jon Bodensteiner.
Cathie’s engaging smile and infectious laugh carried her through the hard times and inspired all those whose lives she touched. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either the Tillandsia Garden Club, 15 Kingsridge Crossing Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32174 or Halifax Sailing Center at 15 Fremont Ct. Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
