Brewing up quality quiet time in an awesome atmosphere
NAPPANEE — Main Street Roasters in Nappanee is more than a coffee house with a warm and welcome ambiance where friends and family can meet. It's also not only a place where individuals can get comfortable to get their Internet fix and some quality quiet time. Marcus and Debra Miller work to make sure their business is one that will keep customers coming back for more. The Millers have four children so know how to make their coffee house a place that features an inviting, homey atmosphere. They started the business venture in 2003 opening the doors Dec. 18.
"We saw that other towns had shops — a place where people could hang out and enjoy coffee with friends or find some calm privacy," said Debra Miller. "Marcus wanted to give people somewhere to sit back, be comfortable and have some peace."
And the Millers' initiative took off from there. In 2005 they remodeled and expanded the Nappanee location from what was formerly the B and B Restaurant to include the building next door in September of 2006 — the extra space providing room for a larger baking facility, more tables, additional seating and the addition of their next venture, a in-house roasting facility (Main Street Roasters).
"Marcus wanted to have better quality control, and to offer the customers a better product," Miller said of her husband's full-time commitment. "We have a broker in South Bend that gets the beans for us from all over the world. We get them green — raw — and he roasts and then grinds a day after they're roasted and it's used or shipped within the week."
That quality freshness is what customers crave and allows the Millers to offer competitive pricing to not only their local patrons but for large-quantity orders, corporate accounts, gifts, and wholesale accounts.
Blends like Espresso, Decaf Expresso, French Roast, and the signatures L.L. Beanz and Main Street Blend, as well as more creative options like Butter Pecan Crunch, Turtle Sundae, Creme Brulee, Cinnamon Coffee Cake, Buttered Toffee and Coconut Dream are popular favorites.
Main Street Roasters also offers holiday-inspired flavors like Mistletoe Kiss, Gingerbread Spice, It's a Wonderful Spice, Drummer Boy Joe, Nutcracker Sweet, and Frosty's Favorite and added some new tastes to its plethora of brewed blessings: Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble, Fireside Marshmallow, Pumpkin Spice, and Apple Cinnamon Strudel as well as offers about 25 types of teas.
If those tapping at their keyboards or talking with friends, family or co-workers find they're hungrier for more than a scone or muffin Main Street Roasters offers breakfast items like croissants, bagels, paninis, oatmeal, biscuits and gravy, fruit and yogurt cups for breakfast as well as an assortment of soups (like the most-popular white chicken chili), salads, sandwiches and wraps.
Unlike the typical coffee shop selections, customers can choose daily from an assortment of freshly baked goods like cookies, coffee cake, cinnamon rolls and assorted bars (like chocolate cake and peanut butter).
And while Main Street Roasters Coffee Shop offers musicians a place to hang out and perform (normally on the weekends), the coffee house is one that can be used (at $5 an hour) as a place for employees, clubs, Bible studies, or other groups to hold conference. Both the small (seats eight to 10) and large (seats 12-15) rooms offer a DVD monitor for use at no extra charge — the larger also featuring a marker board and easel. But reserving a spot is the only way to assure one of the popular facility rooms will be available.
The Millers' venture has been so successful that they opened another location in South Bend (102 S. Main St.) in 2009.
From lattes to lemonade, mocha to muffins, and coffees to quesadillas, Main Street Roasters Coffee House offers customers of all ages friendly, dependable service and a place to relax alone or gather with friends — somewhere that they can feel "at home."
