Bremen schools make the grade again

October 4, 2012

BREMEN — For the second year in a row, both Bremen High School and Bremen Elementary-Middle School have earned a grade of “A” from the Indiana Department of Education.
Beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, the State Board of Education changed the labels for school categories based on student performance from the terms Exemplary, Commendable, Academic Progress, Academic Watch and Academic Probation to easy-to-understand letter grades (A, B, C, D and F). The new A-F labels improve transparency by allowing parents and community members to better recognize how well Indiana schools are performing and leading students to achieve positive academic outcomes.
Indiana’s A-F model holds schools and corporations to higher standards and provides a more accurate picture of their performance by incorporating student academic growth and graduation rates, as well as college and career readiness, as measures of success.
Bremen High School Principal Bruce Jennings attributes the school’s 3.85 score (out of 4.0 possible) to the greater school community.
“Kudos to all of the hard-working people in our school family, including our staff, students and parents,” Jennings said.
Bremen Elementary-Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska said his staff should get credit for the school’s perfect 4.0 grade.
“I am proud to say that the biggest factor leading to our success is our incredible and dedicated staff.  This rating is a direct reflection of the hard work, quality instruction, and dedication that our staff members invest each day to benefit our students.”
Both schools earned a letter “A” grade for both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.
