BREMEN — Eighteen high school student-athletes from across Indiana are beginning the school year as members of the 2012-13 IHSAA Student Advisory Committee (SAC).
Every year, high school principals and athletic directors send nominations to IHSAA on behalf of student athletes who attended the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference in June. Out of those received, 20 are selected for interviews by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee, Executive staff and returning members of the Student Advisory Committee. From those 20 interviews, nine are invited to join the new group.
Sara Slabaugh, a junior at Bremen High School, was chosen to serve on the committee, out of six that were nominated from Bremen High School by Principal Bruce Jennings and Athletic Director Troy Holmes. Slabaugh participates in cross country, basketball (as a point guard) and runs several events in track. Her favorite sports are cross country and basketball.
“Cross country allows me to push myself more and rely on my teammates to get good times and to help push themselves to get good places.” Slabaugh said. She has been running cross country since she was in the sixth grade.
“Basketball allows me to rely on my teammates and to learn how to work well together, ” she said.
Slabaugh is also involved in other clubs and extra-curricular activities including being the secretary of the Key Club, and a member of the DECA, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Students, and the Volunteer Club.
“We do projects around the community to make it a better place and help with the Boys and Girls Club at school,” she explained.
Slabaugh was also the secretary of her sophomore class last year.
As a member of the SAC, she, along with the 17 other members, will be involved in hosting meetings with student peers at the upcoming Fall Area Principals’ Meetings; assisting with the awards ceremonies at IHSAA state championship events throughout the school year; and planning and administering the annual IHSAA Student Leadership Conference in June. SAC members also assist with the development of the IHSAA Captain’s Handbook which is distributed to area member schools in the fall and with the creation of public service announcements addressing good sporting behavior.
