The Braided Palms opens
BREMEN — Long-time friends Ann Rogers and Tina Keyser met when attending beauty school and today, the licensed beauticians have opened their own location in Bremen. Both Bremen residents and both fond of a particular couples resort in Jamaica, they named their hair and tanning salon after a logo similar to the resort’s and called it The Braided Palms.
Rogers is a native of South Bend who married a Bremen man and has two children. “I was working 40 minutes away but didn’t’ want to have to travel that far,” she explained of her former beauty care position. “I have about 20 years of experience. But I’m trying to build a more local customer base. Most of my clients are from the St. Joe County and Niles, Buchanan (Mich.) area.”
Keyser has been married for 15 years and also has two children and works at the new salon part-time (as she works another job full-time until she can build a stronger customer base).
While Rogers and Keyser have been licensed since 1990, both women took time off from their crafts
The salon features a calming and inviting decor (the women spent a large part of their summer remodeling the inside of the building) and three Level 3 tanning beds each with 42 bulbs and facial tanners. The beds are also CD-capable if customers want to listen to their own music while relaxing and tanning and The Braided Palms sells popular Australian Gold and Swedish Beauty products for tanners.
Tanning packages run $7 for one session, $25 for five, $45 for 10, and $75 for 20 sessions and unlike most tanning salons, the session packages do not expire. To tan as often as a customer would want for a month, the charge is only $55. Rogers and Keyser invite all new customers to come in and get their very first tan for free so they can test the beds for themselves.
And for those that want the tan without the rays, The Braided Palms will be offering the alternative spray — by appointment with the technician Angel Davenport — Wednesdays and Thursdays. Davenport is the newest member of the beauty service team and has been giving spray tans for more than two years after owning her own tanning business for more than six.
Salon hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointments can be made and walk-ins are also accepted for customer convenience. “We know what people want and need and we offer all our customers a clean, friendly environment with quality attention and services,” said Rogers.
The Braided Palms’ official grand opening celebration will take place Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can meet the staff and take part in raffles for a buy-one-get-one special on tanning packages and $10 off a one-month unlimited tanning package. Visit the salon at 108 N. Center St. (in the old Sweet Pinks building) or call 574-546-0565 or check out the business’ Facebook page to learn more.
