By Kayla Bear Intern NAPPANEE — No, it cannot be contracted by eating pork. Yes, it is dangerous. No, it is not more benign than regular seasonal flu. Yes, people have died from it. No, a seasonal flu shot does not protect from it. Eighteen percent of students absent in a given week, 300 immunizations administered and one particular student documenting more than two weeks’ worth of absences could only add up to one thing: H1N1.

By Amy Wenger Correspondent WAKARUSA — Wednesday, Nov. 11, the students of Wakarusa Elementary School learned about the courage and valor of the heroes within our midst. It was a message more resounding than any textbook could ever convey. The events of tribute were inspired by those who set aside the desires of their own hearts for the cause of a greater good. It was a time to offer reverence and respect to the men and women of our nation who have served and fought, who have lived and died, for the freedoms we cherish.

By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE — Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 3, Nappanee residents and police officers gathered as they do each year to pay tribute to one of their own: Sergeant Brant “Butch” Nine. Nine, 41, died in the line of duty Nov. 3, 1988 when he responded to a call at a local jewelry store. The suspect had been attempting to pass a bad check, when Nine and another officer arrived. Following a struggle, the suspect grabbed Nine’s gun and shot him in the chest. When he tried to run away, the other officer, Philip D. Hochstetler, intervened. Further gunfire ensued, leaving the suspect injured.
