Stolen tow truck wrecks off bridge, driver dies E-mail

HAMLET — Nicholas Jacobs, 29, of Fort Wayne died from massive internal injuries he sustained when he took a nose-dive off the U.S. 30 overpass and smashed into U.S. 35 below in a wrecker he stole from Bob’s Towing in Plymouth Thursday night.
Jacobs had been released the same day from Westville Correctional Facility, where he’d been incarcerated for felony OWI and auto theft. The auto theft was for stealing the same wrecker a year and a half ago that he stole from Bob’s Towing Thursday.

Hospitals curtail visits due to flu E-mail

Starke Memorial and Pulaski Memorial Hospitals Thursday announced restrictions on visitors to reduce the spread of flu in the hospitals.
Starke Memorial banned visitors under age 14, while Pulaski Memorial banned visitors under age 18.
“For the safety of loved ones in the hospital, and the medical professionals caring for them, Starke Memorial Hospital officials are strongly discouraging the visitation of individuals in the hospital effective immediately. Specifically, those ages 14 and under are not permitted to visit the hospital,” an SMH press release announced.

Food inspection deal sours E-mail

It appears the responsibility of performing food safety inspections may once again fall under the jurisdiction of the Starke County Health Department staff, according to information presented at the bi-monthly Starke County Commissioner’s meeting Monday morning.
Recently, the Health Department appointed Dave Kesvormas as the Starke County Health inspector. However, Kesvormas learned when seeking insurance that his premium would be between $8000 and $10,000 annually. The job only pays an annual salary of $14,000 for the contracted position, which would leave Kesvormas with a meager $4,000 a year for services rendered.
