Auxiliary raffle tickets now available E-mail

BREMEN — Tickets are available for one of Bremen’s most prized yearly possessions as part of one of the community’s most prized traditions.
The Community Hospital of Bremen Auxiliary is having their yearly Barbecue and Quilt Raffle to help raise money for the hospital. Thursday Aug. 6 is the day for this year’s gathering in Sunnyside Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

BREMEN — Thick smoke hung in the air as the last bits of red, white and blue cloth slowly turned to gray ashes. Nearby, members of the Bremen VFW/American Legion remained vigilant until the flames faded and the wire boxes cooled.
According to Bremen Post Commander/Third District Vice Commander of Marshall County Jay Kling, when an American flag becomes tattered, stained, faded or otherwise “unusable,” there is only one way to properly “retire” it; it must be ceremonially burned.

Former Doris Day secretary shares fond memories E-mail

BREMEN — Doris Day really was and is as sweet as she was portrayed in the movies that she starred in, says her former personal secretary and assistant, Mary Anne Barothy, author of the book, “Day at a Time: An Indiana Girl’s Sentimental Journey to Doris Day’s Hollywood and Beyond.”
Barothy, who lives in the Indianapolis area and works for the Little Sisters of the Poor, spoke to a full house of around 40 who came to the Bremen Public Library last Wednesday to hear about her memories of living with the celebrity. Some came from Rochester to listen to her and to buy books and them autographed.
