The committee behind Culver's B.I.R.D. (Building, Inspiring, Recreating, and Discovering) is planning a one-day return of the successful service event it sponsored locally last summer. Scheduled for Saturday, April 23, the student-led service day combines the efforts of students from Culver Academies and Culver Community High School, as well as adults from both areas and beyond, to assist anyone in the community with work projects with which they need assistance (last year's efforts ranged from cleanup jobs to painting or repairing houses).
"We are looking for (both) volunteers and projects to work on," says Andrea Canacci, a senior at Culver Girls Academy who, as a local resident, attended Culver Community Schools in the past and has a heart for all facets of the Culver community. She says B.I.R.D. is also seeking donations to fund supplies needed for the jobs handled by the group.
"It will only be one day," she adds, "so we would like both the volunteers and residents to know this is their chance to participate in volunteering, getting help, donating, or simply coming to the night event we will host at the town depot that evening."
Applications for assistance from B.I.R.D. are in the process of being placed at venues around town, or residents may call Canacci at 216-280-5065. She emphasizes parents and other adult supervisors are especially needed this year, in the event that -- as was the case last year -- large groups of volunteers participate.
"Since (last) summer’s event went so well, we are all very excited to see how much we can do this spring," Canacci explains. "The B.I.R.D. committee was very grateful to have such great support from the whole community (and) we would like to make this organization something that can last in the Culver community."
