Biomet's Miller to speak Wednesday at United Way kickoff

September 25, 2012

Dr. Dane H. Miller

PLYMOUTH – Warsaw’s Maverick CEO, Dr. Dane H. Miller, is the featured speaker for the United Way of Marshall County Kick Off event in Plymouth Wednesday.
Dr. Dane H. Miller, co-founder and former CEO, President and Director of Biomet in Warsaw will address the Marshall County audience at 11:30 a.m. at Christos’ Banquet Center, 830 Lincolnway East, Plymouth.
Dr. Miller was CEO of Biomet for almost 29 years and grew the company from $17,000 to $2.2 billion in sales during that time period.
As strong as that legacy is, Dr. Miller’s leadership style has also been recognized in many high-profile publications.
In April 2007, USA Today was celebrating its 25th year of publication and decided to identify the 25 most top-performing stocks. On this list was: Microsoft at No. 8, Best Buy at No. 9 and Oracle at No. 10 Ranked above them all was Biomet at No. 7.
In 2001, Forbes.com reported the findings from its First Annual CEO Value Survey.
It looked at 278 Forbes 500 CEOs. The No. 1 ranking went to Warren Buffett with Berkshire Hathaway. Dr. Miller came in at No. 4.
Biomet was one of seven “10x” companies out of 20,400, that were featured in the book, Great by Choice, by Jim Collins, author or coauthor of six books that have sold in total more than ten million copies worldwide including Good to Great. A 10x company is one that beat their industry 10-fold.
The Maverick CEO, published in 2008, is the biographical portrait of Dr. Miller and describes how he built one of the most successful orthopedic companies in the world today based on the principles of compassion, hard work and loyalty and the importance of leaving a legacy.
Dr. Miller has been recognized for taking the same hands-on approach to philanthropy as he does to his business. His community spirit is evident from his award-winning efforts to restore historic Winona Lake to donating and firing off the annual Fourth of July fireworks for years to playing a “crazy” waiter to raise money for charity.
The second United Way kickoff event will be at Papa’s Restaurant in Culver on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. United Way will be hosting the Chamber of Commerce of Culver and special guests at their monthly meeting.
The third United Way kickoff event will be a breakfast held in Bremen on Oct. 4, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Community Hospital of Bremen Café; breakfast will be served starting at 6:30 a.m. Senator Ryan Mishler has been invited as guest speaker.
The United Way of Marshall County invests in the building blocks for a good life: income, education & health.
All United Way programs seek to advance the common good. By helping children, leading adults to self-sufficiency and strengthening neighborhoods and communities, United Way agencies and the thousands of volunteers and donors who support them create a stronger future for Marshall County.
All three events are free and open to the public and furnished through generous support from Christos’ Banquet Hall in Plymouth, Papa’s Restaurant in Culver and the Community Hospital of Bremen Café in Bremen.
